I'm really sad about the fall-off of posting on LJ, but I don't really think that one's down to AO3, at least not chiefly. It seems to be more of a consequence of the growth of Tumblr (though I still don't get why people love Tumblr so much, even after having tried it out), the DDOS attack/ reliablity issues, combined with some badly implemented changes, LJ has been having lately, and probably also the split between LJ and DW.

I blame the fall in LJ use to a few things: Selling the site to questionable owners, crap updates, the big SJW crusades of '07 (Strikethrough and Boldthrough), the reactionary shifts to DW and Tumblr...

And Tumblr. The most non-community-intended site that Fandom has ever been stupid enough to move into.

AO3 is not intended to be a community site, not like places like LJ. AO3 is an archive. It's there to post fic. People on community sites can post their fics to AO3 and put links on their journals. They've bee doing that for years for FFN-stored fics too.
