Circumcision is mutilation, and whilst it's not on quite the same level as some kind of FGM, the way that feminists pile on and try to shut down any discussion show about how much they actually care about bodily autonomy.

I've seen many feminists agree with you that circumcision isn't something they would want done to their child. But anything who compares circumcision to fucking female genital mutilation deserves to be piled on. There's a reason that shit is illegal in the majority of countries

Talking about FGM in the singular shows about how much you know about the topic bb.

Re: Unpopular opinion thread

(Anonymous) 2013-10-11 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
You had to add the 'bb' at the end? Really that was completely necessary to your point?

DA

Adding the word bb just shows you're a troll who doesn't actually care about FGM or circumcision. That or a tumblr fanatic who thinks Wikipedia is a legitimate source for researching.

bb sounds more like something I'd hear from sfd and/or its associated anon comm than tumblr, IMO

One big difference tho, FMG is illegal in many countries (except for backwater, undeveloped ones). While circumcision is still perfectly legal in the US and no one seems to care about making the mutilation of a boy's genitals illegal.

Feminist here, and I find circumcision to be mutilation.

Same here

I don't care about male circumcision.

I'd file this one under "technically may be correct but not very high on my priority list," and not because I'm a man-hating feminist or anything like that. I just haven't known enough circumcised men to get worked up over it to think it's a major problem. (I'm sure there are men out there who do feel that way due to personal bad experiences with it. But then there are probably women who had problems with ear piercings their parents had done when they were three months old, but I don't see a huge movement against that practice, which lacks even the dubious justification of hygiene.)

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the same way.

Re: Unpopular opinion thread

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
Even if the kid doesn't want the piercings, it doesn't affect anything in their life to have them. There is no loss of sensation in their earlobes or anything remotely uncomfortable about it. All that early ear piercings do is give the kid little holes in their earlobes should they choose to use them.

That's nowhere near comparable to circumcision, which has been shown to alter genital sensation, and it's irreversible. Not wearing earrings will basically reverse the effect of the piercings. So basically... one is a slight discomfort for a bit and doesn't have any real negative problems for the kid, while circumcision has legitimate downsides for no real benefits.

I was totally with you right until you said "the way that feminists...", and then I lost all my respect. It's sad, Anon. You were doing so good.

BTW feminist here and the way circumcision is so prevalent on your lands horrifies me on a personal manner. I just don't think it compares to the fucked-upness of FGM. So thank you for at least throwing in there the "not on the same level".

Yes. Not all feminist are the same on all issues.

Re: Unpopular opinion thread

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
I'd think male circumcision was a serious issue if more people who'd been circumcised came forward with complaints/problems. It's probably a catch-22 (no one will come forward until people make a fuss, and vice versa) but still. I get that there are serious problems with body modification to infants, but if the only people being offended are people who've never experienced it and don't even have the right bits...well, I'll call it a cultural thing.

To be honest, I've never understood the objections to circumcisions. It just doesn't seem like that big of a problem to me.

Also, I am circumcised.

100 baby boys die in the US a year because of circumcisions.

I never knew any of the statistics. That really is horrible. Obviously nothing happened to me (which is why I commented) but I just Googled it and it really is a high death rate for an unnecessary procedure :/

Sort of related, I feel that way about spaying and neutering. I spay and neuter all of my pets but I feel guilty about putting them under the knife like that.

Re: Unpopular opinion thread

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Feminists don't pile on people who think male circumcision is wrong, they pile on people who bring up male circumcision in every discussion about FGM as if the widespread acceptance of one form of genital mutilation should make the other okay. They're both unnecessary surgical alterations of a very sensitive and easily damaged part of a child's body that serves zero purpose for the risk it incurs, and to me, both are wrong and incredibly bizarre. But I think FGM has earned its priority because the genital damage the standard version of that operation causes is not remotely equivalent to the damage standard male circumcision causes, simple as that.

Re: Unpopular opinion thread

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
I'm another feminist who opposes cosmetic body modification of underage children. It's very definitely not the same kind of problem FGM is by a wide margin, but consent is important and the person that body belongs to is not able to give that consent.
