Difficult to live with can mean many things...And my grandmother did the same thing your's did, albeit probably by a different route.

One thing you have to remember is that, as abusive as she may have been [I only say "may have" because I *do* know someone who claims they were abused for reasons that are...well. Not abusive, but anyone else's definition], it's possible your grandmother/mother still loved her and wanted to honor the good parts of her by naming you after her.

That's not to say you have to like her, and if you want there's nothing to say you have to keep the name - or that you can't do something to make the name awesome.
