I'm terrified of video game glitches

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I'm playing Skyrim right now and I just clipped through a wall and I swear, nothing has ever made my blood go cold so fast. I just sat here for a second looking at my screen in horror. It's been like this since I can remember - when I was young I stopped playing Ocarina of Time because when I rode Epona down a hill too fast, the camera would go lower than the ground and scared the shit out of me. Deep water in games have that effect on me too.

How stupid is that?

Camera and clipping glitches are so common and have been since games went 3D. I think the problem is they shatter your suspension of disbelief which is very jarring for you.

Maybe... I'm not too scared of body-altering glitches, though. But I think realizing the ground I'm on isn't real is jarring.

yeah this is basically part of it for me personally

They ever so slightly freak me out (although I tend to seek them out ala how some seek creepypasta), and I have a friend who's outright terrified of them to the point where it's probably a phobia. Don't worry, it's not too uncommon.

That's kinda comforting to know :)

Some of them can be really freaky, like a character's head turning all the way around. But most of them I find hilarious.

Hahahah yeah, those aren't really the ones that scare me! They're pretty hilarious! I'm more afraid of the ones that make me realize "I'm" not standing on solid ground, but on a one pixel thick sheet. That's some shit.

Like when your character falls beneath the game's surface/ground and all you can see is sky/space? Oh god. That is kind of creepy, too.

Exactly! It makes me freeze for a second then freak out and try to get out of there asap. Sometimes I get so scared I actually close the game

yeah this shit freaks me out especially, mostly i guess bc when i play a game i ~become one with the character~ so when buggy, out-of-my-control shit like that happens, i almost feel it personally?? kinda?? idk

I was in the first dungeon of Fable II and I jumped off a cliff. My dog in the game followed me but a glitch happened its body froze while its head followed me around. Not, like, actually following me around the screen - it stayed attached to the body - but it turned to watch my character wherever she went and it still panted and barked.

DISTURBING AS FUCK. And also weirdly sad. ;3;

I was horrified of MissingNo for the longest time as a child, so I completely understand.

i don't really think it's stupid, honestly. i feel uncomfortable with some glitches or clip issues like that - we see a side of the game that looks fucked up because the designers didn't design these parts with our viewing in mind. but when we're in a world and we're immersing ourselves in it, and then suddenly it's like, oh, no, this is just a bunch of textures molded into a hill or a shrub but beyond that it's just nothingness. i got weirded out looking at skyrim test cells earlier. idk it's hard to explain but it's just concerning. deep web stuff does that to me too though, shit like this. it just looks unfinished and ancient and it's freaky

Maaaan, one time I glitched in Amnesia. It was quite the adventure. Pros: The monster that was barreling toward me is no longer doing so. Probably because he pushed me into a wall and I'm not registering now. And when I turn around, I can see the rest of the level through the walls. Which is kinda cool. Cons: I'm stuck. I have to reload my save now.

Thank you Amnesia monster for falcon punching me out of the map. I guess.

They really kind of freak me out, too, and i don't even play, i just watch sometimes. It's like - your person is now stuck in this horrible Limbo-no-where-land and it's really just...awful.

Dude, I'm exactly the same. My main problem has always been with video game skies; I used to have to cover my eyes when I played the Ballad of Gales in Wind Waker. It's actually comforting to know there are so many people who have the same issue. c:

Not all of them freak me out, but some scare the hell out of me. Like those glitches where the ragdoll mechanics of the models make them start rapidly flipping and twitching and breakdancing all over the place all broken and shit? If I ever ran into that myself, it would make me nope the fuck out of the game right there.

As long as the game doesn't glitch and then erase your save file. That happened to me in the Water Temple of Ocarina of Time, and I'm still bitter.

Do you live in Creepypasta Land, because, if so, that's totally rational.
