Re: Unpopular opinion thread

I believe in activism done well. But Social Justice (the way it's handled) often just reminds me of a child or teenager's attempt at activism.

I just look at Tumblr and just shake my head. It's very black and white about things that are more complicated. Consent is something I can understand being black and white about. Sexism in general? No. Our society's sexism is a horrible messy complicated thing that just screws over everyone. Saying things like "women are the only one who have problems with rape?" Pfff. Most people don't ACKNOWLEDGE that men can be raped unless they're children. Many get told "bad sex doesn't equal rape" or "you should have enjoyed it what's wrong with you". But according to some SJers once a person says something bad they're the fucking devil and need to die right now.

Also the tendency to attack people who disagree...not just people who have rude opinions but people who are ignorant or asking questions. The "step on a lego" and "go kill yourself" and "drink bleach if you don't agree with my horrible overblown statement."'s are very troubling especially when coming from the mouths of people claiming to be for "justice". Look, no one's saying you can't be mad about bigotry and such. But when you trot out "drink bleach" and "Kill yourself" you're putting yourself on the same level. Being shitty to a shitty person doesn't make your actions not shitty.

"We don't have to be NICE about callouts" True, but here's a tip, depending on the case, if you are really interested in CHANGING things, it kind of helps your case. And when you're calling out people over EVERY LITTLE DAMN THING....it starts to get tiring. I hate when people over use 'call out'. When you're "OMG SO CALLING PEOPLE OUT ON THEIR SHIT" when the shit is say not knowing your preferred pronouns the moment they met you and APOLOGIZING when they get it wrong.....just....grow up. (it's one thing to purposefully call someone a pronoun they don't like. it's another to honestly not know upon LOOKING at them. I had a coworker who looked very androgynous and I always wondered if she was trans but never talked to her or asked because I didn't want to get it wrong and start something. I honest to God wasn't sure.)

Here's a tip. Being nice about explaining when someone doesn't understand or asks or someone makes a mistake and you calmly tell correct them and explain why it bothered you tends to work better than screaming that they should kill themselves.

Some people might not see this as unpopular but...(forgive me) I've seen just as much SJ ideals around here at times as I have on Tumblr.

Quit fighting other people and try fighting the IDEALS of bigotry themselves, which includes "us versus them" rhetoric.

You do realize that's because most of them ARE in fact children or teenagers? I mean, it shouldn't be any surprise to you that that's the level of quality they are putting out. Though sometimes you get folks like those at calloutstuck that don't even have that excuse.
