Why don't you simply go on wiki and just read the summary before you see the sequel?

This. Though I am kind of perplexed by someone seeing a movie that is a sequel/prequel/x# of a series without having any interest in the films that come before it, but that's just me.

My best friend and I went to see Fast & Furious 6. Another friend went with us even though she hadn't seen any of the others because she wanted to hang out with us. Don't know how often that happens, though.

I've done it, but mostly with movies that I think will stand on their own pretty well. I know I saw the second Spiderman movie and not the first, and I really don't know anything about Spiderman except from a comic strip that ran in the newspaper when I was a kid. I didn't feel I was missing anything. I can't think of that many other examples off-hand, unless you want to count The Dark Knight Rises but I think a lot of people saw that without seeing Batman Begins.

(Well, I also saw Star Trek V even thought I hadn't seen IV, which is a shame because IV couldn't possibly have sucked as much as V did.)

IV is awesome. It has time travel and whales. And lots of jokes because of the time travel.

I really need to check it out. I don't see very many movies, even on DVD. Which is maybe part of why I sometimes end up seeing only part of a series.

Don't forget the nuclear wessels!

Or the bus scene. Or the transparent aluminum scene.

I went to see that very movie with my mom because she really wanted to see it, and I'd never seen one of them before. weird.

I just read the wiki summary. That being said, when I saw the 3rd Star Wars prequel, for the life of me I could not remember Anakin losing his hand. I think I blocked Clone Wars from my memory.

This.
In my case I may have actually seen the previous movie but my memory just sucks :/

Not remembering the whole plot of a movie 3 years later doesn't mean your memory sucks, unless the plot is very basic. It usually means the movie wasn't that memorable to begin with.

At least in my experience.

Doesn't mean they weren't fun while you watched them, but sometimes they just aren't that good or original or moving that your brain bothers to remember them.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes the movie was forgettable, and sometimes it's some little detail that you'd probably remember if you'd just watched the movie, but years later it's slipped your mind.

I have the same problem with book series. I've read books trying to figure out if I'd missed something in a previous book, or if it was actually new information in the flashbacks.

I'd hate that. I don't even like recaps on tv shows as I feel like they take up new show information time.

If you like a series enough, usually you'd watch a movie again. If not, wikipedia has always helped me out. It's good for a general refresher.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-12 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too, OP. I feel like they need to reference what happened at least enough so I can remember, or else just do references that are bonus if you get them, but fine if you don't.

OTOH, I had little sympathy for my cousin who wanted to come see the 2nd LOTR movie with us. She tried to get me to explain the first movie on the way to the theater and I was like "so.. there's a hobbit? And a ring? and..." It didn't go very well for her.

Personally I'd hate that, I find TV show recaps annoying at the best of times and to me it would just eat up time that could be better spent on the movie itself.

But then I am someone who is very unlikely to go a year without watching the previous movies in a series I love.

I checked wikipedia for Iron Man 2 before seeing 3 - don't feel like I missed much.

Movies don't bother me so much because if I go to a sequel I've probably seen the preceding movie(s) a thousand times, but if a TV show doesn't have a recap I'm fucked. Person of Interest doesn't do recaps (on tv at least) and I have nooo idea what is going on.

I generally remember enough that I don't need it so I'm biased. However I think that even if it's a sequel it should be able to stand on its own. If it can't then it's not that good of a movie in my opinion.
