But if they are out of work, I hope they suffer from the lack of social services they voted for.

The person above me has a good point. But also, something being where it's needed when it's needed is the surest way to encourage someone to reconsider an opinion. Making them do without it in no way encourages people to be more sympathetic to those who are in that unfortunate position after they've clawed their way out of it. If anything, there's a 'I survived on my own and you should too' mentality.

Plus, it's just really vindictive and petty to hope someone suffers terribly because they don't agree with your ideology.

Actually, it's more hoping someone suffers the consequences of the terrible thing they helped cause by supporting the people who instituted it. But you're right, it would be more effective in the long-term if they benefit from things the people they supported haven't been able to destroy yet.
