Yeah, I second this - perhaps part of it too is that when an actor is in something as iconic as Buffy (and isn't necessarily able to disappear into a new character) then it's tougher to avoid being typecast.

(e.g., I've rarely been able to ignore all the Willow mannerisms in Hannigan's portrayal of Lily.)

The iconic nature of Buffy is a good point, I've seen a lot of interviews with actors where they say being a really popular character can actually hurt you in casting because the directors will just see you as that character and not want to hire you. And since SMG had the title role she would be the most recognized.

Hannigan was also lucky she got signed onto a show that was popular and stuck around. SMG just seems to get shows that don't have staying power.

Yeah. It's not a coincidence that at least some of SMG's post-Buffy work has been, "strong lead character in a supernatural story" (i.e. The Grudge). Granted, that's hardly the worst character you could end up playing over and over (esp. if you're a woman), but it's still type-casting.
