Is it a strange coincidence that you and I, the first two responses, both picked detectives?

Detectives lead interesting lives, so people are likely to want to be them (unless the detectives in question are seriously screwed up in some ways, which is why few people choose Holmes or Poirot). Detective literature/cinematograph often comes in series; the main protagonist can hardly die or get crippled midway, which is also an advantage. This is not to mention that is one of the most popular genres in the world.

I would never pick Marlowe (mostly because of the romance backstory), but I do so appreciate Chandler <3 His are one of the first crime novels I really liked (the very first was by Rex Stout).

I could've picked someone else, btw, but all the other characters/famous folks either have romance in their lives or end up completely screwed.

If we're doing detectives, I choose Nero Wolfe.

The lack of physical activity of any sort would drive me nuts.
But why would you want to be Wolfe? He often seems to be unhappy, and too many things cause him distress.

I don't think he's unhappy; I think he's just a grouch. And he has epicurean tastes, he has a fine lifestyle, and he's constantly getting involved in interesting stories. I think there are worse ways to be, particularly if you're going to be a detective.

Makes sense.
