I'm not defending him but I know a whole lot of liberal people (I'm not living in the US, btw) who constantly use the word "gay" as well as the notion of engaging in anal sex as insults. And yet they vote for marriage equality and protect actual gay friends from harm, stand up for them when they are threatened.

It's hypocritical but these people often get a pass because "at least they are also actively helping gay people". So basically what they say gets cancelled out by what they do and vote for. I don't approve of this, being gay myself and feeling really shitty when they make their jokes, but at the same time I feel like I can trust them because they have shown that they will help gay people when they need shelter or someone to protect them. Can't say the same for our "right wing". When they threaten gay people they oftentimes *really* mean it and it gets violent real quick.
