The same way Snape and Harry get paired or Harry and Draco get paired.

Spander doesn't really make any sense at all within the context of canon, but it's fun when a writer can make a pairing like that make sense.

I guess I don't see either of those pairings working well either. (Maybe Harry and Draco, further down the line after Draco's realized what dumb ideas his dad had, maybe.) And I guess if you can figure out how to do it in character....but I don't see it being done well in character at all.

I didn't see either of those in canon either. IDK how the fannish zeitgeist glommed on. And I freely admit that a lot of times fics for those pairings are not in character, but it is totally possible. And when it happens, it is glorious. Although, I will admit that I tend to enjoy a lot of fics for those pairings in particular that *aren't* exactly quite in character either.
