da, It's not being a dick. It's like telling a kid that they'll grow out of loving something they're obsessed with. It's likely they'll change their mind about it. It doesn't necessarily mean they will, and it's not that continuing to love that thing makes them immature... it's just an observation. Most people change dramatically as they age.

It's usually said in a patronizing way and THAT'S fucked. But just noting that it's likely they'll change their mind isn't mean.

Oh I don't really think one way or another on the actual point (I personally still hate tomatoes, and still love cartoons, both things my parents said I'd grow out of. But then I've also come to appreciate the taste of Tea, which I loathed as a kid, so sometimes insisting someone's preferences / opinions are childish and will change are right and sometimes way wrong) my calling of the dick was down to the patronizing. FYI, if someone uses the words "You must be young" to argue a point, I'm going to call dick.
