I'm not an USian either, but I found this link useful as a place to start:

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/sep/30/us-shutdown-explainer-non-americans

Adding to that: Basically the Tea Party movement has gained A LOT of force among the Republicans and they are VERY right-wing. Like, neoliberalism taken to crazy levels, if they weren't working within democratic parameters and means (poorly-designed democracy, but still democracy), I'd dare to call them anarcho-capitalists.

These old white guys are very powerful, economically invested in the US NOT having a decent healthcare system because it won't make profits for a lot of them, and emotionally invested on not letting a liberal black man win over them. So it's basically a huge temper tantrum that happens to screw over a lot of people from the lower classes to even the middle class.

neoconservatism, not neoliberalism. they hate liberals and anything to do with liberals. hate loathe despise going to hell et cetera.

Yeah, but for some inexplicable reason it's still referred to as "neoliberalism." I don't get it either.

Wikipedia tells me that the meaning of Neoliberalism changed because of the way Spanish-speaking countries used the term (Neoliberalismo) and executed it. And then the new meaning bled back into English in the 80's.

IDK how it's there, but here "neoliberalism" means "Economical liberalism + Morally conservative".

Damn, that is the exact opposite of me. I didn't even know those kind of people existed.

The right-wing coalition here is comprised entirely of people like that: former Pinochet allies, ruthless empresaries, and the Opus Dei is HIGHLY involved.

I hate them with a fiery passion.

They're also the most incompetent motherfuckers on Earth. Surely you recall how our moron of a president dared to run to Obama's desk and sit at it while on an Official Visit?

Are you by any chance from the University of Chicago? :'D

It's okay, Anon. I don't fault your institution for the Chicago Boys. I used to go to one of the most left-wing unis here and we still got our fair share of nutcases at the Faculty of Economics and Business.

They wouldn't have been of any impact if not for Pinochet. *Offers a hug*

Haha, thanks. Yeah, the rest of the school is fine, but the economics department...

Re: Obamacare

(Anonymous) 2013-10-14 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Well, they are neoliberals, many of them just wouldn't use the term, because reasons. Many of them are also neoconservatives - neoconservatism and neoliberalism are pretty compatible.

Political terminology in the United States makes no sense! It's great.

Re: Obamacare

(Anonymous) 2013-10-14 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
This, basically. They don't want higher wages, yet they also don't want government assistance programs. The cost of living has skyrocketed and the rate of pay has basically stayed the same. What they want basically evens out to "Everyone who isn't rich should just die."

Too bad they need the poor and the dwindling middle class to keep their asses rich. Seriously, Wal*mart expects INCREASING sales every year. If you don't make their increased sales margin, you don't get a bonus. They make billions of dollars a year, and yet they are upset they're losing money. High cost of living+dwindling help=Not much money to spend on your shit. Not rocket science.

Re: Obamacare

I'm glad I got it right. 90% of the time I spend on the internet is in English, and many of the people I follow and articles on politics are from the US.

As for Wal*mart? Heh. Millions? Try billions, dude/tte. They are NOT losing money: They had more than enough to buy our biggest and meanest supermarket chain here in goddamn Chile. And they're applying their horrible job politics to the poor people that work at those supermarkets as much as Chilean law lets them. Look at the upper left corner: http://www.lider.cl/dys/

And they have 40.9% of the market here /)_x I reckon it's even worse in the US? So really, there's ABSOLUTELY NO JUSTIFICATION WHATSOEVER to all the shit they do.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/08/15/why-are-walmart-stores-underperforming-blame-their-terrible-wages.html

I used to work there. There was this sign right outside of the office in back that had a number you -had- to meet to get a bonus. We never made it. Even on Black Friday, they expect their yearly sales to go up. Which, well, is impossible. You need to pay people money or else they have nothing to spend, you know?

Thank you! I shall give this a second reading tomorrow - it's 05:01 am here; but I skimmed through the article and realized the issue was way more complicated (yet obvious) than I previously thought.

I'm sorry you had to go through that. It must have been terribly stressful :C
