It's 'Night Film' by Marisha Pessl. A brilliant book, but I agree, godawful cover.

It does look an interesting book - I might check it out for after I'm finished Perdido Street Station (or perhaps the rest of the Bas-Lag books, depending how I feel once I'm finished PSS)...so kudos to the OP for giving the book some more exposure, where the cover would have just put me off.
