Fat shaming week just ended.

Any thoughts? Do you shame fat people, or not? Do you think it helps with the obesity problem?

No.

Every man is an island, and what anyone choose to do is their own business because it never effects anyone else.

Every man is an island

I think you are trying to be funny.

Except when they are sitting next to me on the airplane.

"Every man is an island" - well as long as you don't need your own zip code for that island of yours, whatever.

...'Fat Shaming Week'? Ohkay, didn't know it was happening. Other people's bodies aren't my business.

It was probably like 4 people on twitter who participated. Or one of those thing people talk about and is totally going to happen this week. But you know...doesn't.

No. Shaming people for something that does not harm me (and in most cases is none of my business) is wrong and cruel. I can't imagine it helps anybody.

Not to say I support or encourage people to be fat. Just that being a jerk is wrong.

There's a week for this? I thought that was just everyday life.

Re: Fat shaming week just ended.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-14 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a week for that? News to me. No, I don't say anything to people, since I'm sure that they know they are fat, but I might go "holy fuck, how can anyone let themselves go like that" silently behind their backs.

I don't think that shaming works, but I do think that doctors should be able to mention to their patients that they have gained too much weight and it will quite likely become a problem at some point.

Wow, that week went by slowly. It felt more like "the entirety of recent Western history."

BAD LIPIDS, BAD! How dare you prance around with your monosaturated molecules!
Seriously though, no. What did you expect, anyway?

I'm confused by the title of this week. Is it a week for celebrating fat shaming or stopping fat shaming?

... was this even a thing? O.o

First time I hear about it, and dude/tte, I have a Tumblr. I always know when something like this goes over.

Uh, no, and I think shaming only helps to make people more neurotic and fucked-up than they already are.

Um... What? When was this?

I had other things to deal with like family and my job. Good and bad.

But fat shaming? No. I don't fucking care what you look like. I care how you act around me. In fact, the only thing I worry about body-image wise is teaching the kids I deal with to like what they've got and that's not something that comes up often.

Re: Fat shaming week just ended.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-15 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
No, if by "shame" you mean taunt or insult people, or chide them to their faces. Being fat myself, though, I don't pretend that it's a good, healthy or (to most people) attractive thing either, and I don't have any more patience with people who do than with people who are assholes about it. There's trying to maintain a positive outlook and then there's deluding yourself.

It's an unfortunate condition many of us have, it's difficult to pin down how any given individual got there or whether they could have prevented or could fix it, and it's no good either deliberately making us feel bad about it or trying to sugar-coat the situation. Same as with any other medical condition, really.

the what now? did you make that up?

and i don't give a shit about an adult's own weight issues

i will however get a bit concerned if a grown adult's dietary choices are the reason behind their child being obese.

Sounds like a failure of an awareness week, no one told me I was fat.
