DW writing/sharing groups for original fantasy fiction?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-14 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm relatively new to Dreamwidth, and want to start posting a fantasy story I'm working on. Are there any good communities (here, or elsewhere - I guess LJ if it's still alive) for fic sharing, or even better, a group for sharing fantasy writing tips/asking for advice/etc?

General writing group recommendations would also be appreciated if there's nothing so specific! For original fiction, that is, not fanfiction. :) Thanks.

http://critiquecircle.com/ lets you post stuff and get crit, for free (though you have to wait a little while for them to approve your membership, but it's not too long a wait, under a day), and they have it separated by genre iirc. I haven't been using it but maybe I'll sign up again.

:\ I've been thinking of starting a writing comm (mainly for f!s people since you're pretty much the only people I talk to on dreamwidth, but it'd be open) but I'm honestly not sure if I can dedicate myself to it.

If there isn't an original writing comm already, you should make it! :D

Thanks for that link, too. I'm kind of afraid to push my fic directly into more "real" critiques - if that makes sense - but I'd love to give it a try.

seconding thanks for the link.

I would share my story to see what people think but....well...I have a lot of stuff decided that I want to do with it , and i'm kind of nervous about running into someone who might insist that I make their change or my story will be "bad". Nghhh.

I know a lot of people scoff at people thinking a story or character is "their baby" but... a lot of personal stuff feelings, experiences and opinions went into it. I'm not averse to changing...I'm just.....worried about being told what I have is bad and stuff.

OP

I know how you feel! I think it's important to decide what the most important things in your story are, and then get multiple opinions to see if it works or not, hopefully with fair reviewers who remember that you're a human who put lots of heart into what you did while still being honest.

I worry too, though. Maybe have a friend check it first who will give you a very gentle review, and work to more serious critiques from there?

There are people who will give you some awful crit, and it's important to learn what to take and what to ignore. If anybody ever outright says "THIS IS AWFUL", guess what they are awful at giving crit and you should ignore everything they say. And if you need to, write them into the story and do horrible things to them (you can take it out later). If I may recommend a book.
