When it comes to racism and sexism, there's nasty and then there's ignorant. The character having those attitudes for reasons of ignorance, then working through them, could be interesting, though as others have noted I wouldn't necessarily trust the writers to do it justice.

On the flip side, given his marriage to Katrina, him being ignorant of the fact that women and men are equal in matters of intelligence and agency is more of a stretch. And he's also portrayed as very worldly for his time, making it likely he'd had enough contact with members of other races to have a realistic viewpoint there as well.
