I'm currently on my organisations fast track scheme.

Now, there are actually theoretically two different tracks - one (the majority of the intake) in which you are given the opportunity to rotate postings for the first two years, and get a specialist posting of your choice, along with bit of extra support, and one chosen from that pool which is going to throw you through the ranks at an incredible speed as long as you can hack it.

I've just been given the chance to interview for the leadership track if I'm interested. It represents an incredible opportunity from a career perspective - but I'm really interested in doing a lot of the more specialist stuff early in my career, experiencing hands on before I jump into management. And I perceive that very much the leadership scheme is going to have you in planning or as a man manager rather than operational.

Unsure how to manoeuvre this. If the leadership scheme does get you interesting postings I wouldn't hesitate, but I'm not sure how well straight up asking that would go down, and having been offered the choice to apply I can see turning it down hurting career progression when I decide I do want to go in for promotion (the not leadership track are still part of a talent pool which will heavily favour them for promotion, just not at the same pace). But I know I will absolutely regret it if I go for leadership and don't get to do what I'm interested in.

Can you ask what types of posts would be involved?
