What's your favorite brand of chocolate bar? (What type? Dark chocolate. Milk chocolate. White chocolate. With or without nuts? Etc.)

My local international grocery store recently got a shipment of Russian chocolate bars. (Babaev and Red October) I want to try them but I am a little cautious. (For one thing they use artificial vanilla flavoring which can often be made from beaver excretions. Yuck.) Would you go for it?

The Hershey's Take 5. Chocolate, peanut butter, peanuts, pretzel, and caramel.

I can't decide. I love all of it. If people share chocolate with me I love them forever.

As for beaver excretions... um, it sounds gross but you probably already eat a bunch of gross stuff without realizing. For me, knowing is the problem. If I didn't know I would eat it. If I do I can't. It's a mental block. So if you don't get a mental block on it you should be able to eat it just fine.

Pretty much this. If it's chocolate I'll probably eat it, and as long as I don't think too much about what's in my food I'm fine.

Ritter Sport chocolate <3 So good. I like Milka as well.

I love all the chocolate. The only type I'm not fond of is jelly centers.

If they look good, sure. You can always look into them on the net, but I have no idea if people review chocolate. The whole beaver excretions things is pretty gross tho. If you do buy them, don't think of it, I guess?

Ooh, the marzipan Ritter chocolate is fantastic. (It's also the only one I can eat, so it's a damn good thing I love marzipan...)

Cheap: Nestle Crunch
Mid-range: Ritter milk chocolate and corn flakes.
Gourmet: Dark chocolate with chile pepper. Just a tiny bit of heat brings out the sweet and bitter.

Ritter Sport is the best, especially Alpenmilch and Pfefferminz.

I just tried Ritter for the first time a few weeks ago, on the recommendation of a clerk with whom I talked chocolate for like half an hour. XD He said if I liked coffee-flavored chocolate I should try the espresso bar, and indeed, it is good... and they were having a two-for-some-low-price sale, so I got a dark chocolate marzipan bar too, and yeah. Not disappointed.

And yes, there are numerous chocolate/candy review sites online. I always check them out before buying anything more expensive than Mars/Hershey's. XD

Any Hershey's is good chocolate. I especially love Reese's cups and Mr. Goodbar. Of course I also like some more "highbrow" chocolates too, but you can't go wrong with Hershey. Unless it's old.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-16 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
Unless you've eaten literally any other brand of chocolate. Then Hershey's is an abomination.

Oh man, there's this brand called Alter Eco. And yes, it's vegan, organic, and fair trade, but even aside from that, it's the best choc-mint dark chocolate I've ever tasted. Guilt-free HNNNGH.

In general, I love dark chocolate. I can tolerate 85% in small quantities, favourite is around the 70-75% mark. Haven't been brave enough to go beyond 85%, though!

Dark chocolate. Just regular dark chocolate. I would LOVE to one day eat a Dark Chocolate Orange, but they don't sell them around here. :(

Hershey's milk chocolate. Best in the world, as far as I'm concerned. (Yes, I have had German, Swiss, and Dutch chocolates. I wasn't impressed.)

(Anonymous) 2013-10-16 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Cadbury milk chocolate. Or dark chocolate. Or the kind with caramel in the chocolate bar.

I can't eat Hershey's anymore. It just tastes like wax to me now.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-16 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much the only kind I don't like is dark chocolate...which really sucks since that's the only kind that's ever in our house [I'm not the one who does food shopping, and most of the time they ~forget~ if I specifically ask for someone that isn't dark.]

It just tastes so bitter to me that I literally end up having to spit out it. : /

Wispa Golds. Standard Wispa chocolate with caramel in the middle, mmmmmm.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-16 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
Galaxy or Lindt milk chocolate. Thorntons Vienesse truffle bars are really good, too. I tried a Hershey's bar once, on a trip to America, and was shocked at how disgusting it tasted in comparison.

Milky Ways. I go nuts for them.

Cadbury's Crunchie bars. Unfortunately, they're impossible to get around here anymore. Other than that, my favorite candy bar depends on my mood. I usually stick to milk chocolate, as white chocolate isn't common around here either and I hate dark chocolate.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-16 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Peanut M&Ms are a candy, I guess, not a chocolate bar, so I guess that doesn't count. But it's by far the candy that I eat the most. If it's specifically chocolate bars, I don't know, I guess Ghiradelli dark chocolate.

I wish they would bring back dark chocolate peanut m&ms. those things were the bomb.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-16 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm, tough call! When I'm slumming it I like plain Hershey's and Kit Kats. When I want to splurge I'll usually get a Ghirardelli caramel bar, milk or dark.

My REAL favorite isn't a bar at all though, it's Harry and David truffles. Which I haven't been able to afford in a long time, alas. :/

I don't care about brands, but while I'll definitivly eat milk chocolate if it's the only chocolate around, what I really love is dark chocolate. Preferently 70%-75%. I've tried until 90%, for the record, but I didn't really like it. 80% is still palatable enough, though.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-16 10:27 am (UTC)(link)
Hachez makes the best chocolate, imo. Very high quality and beautiful flavour.

Personally, I'm no fan of the popular "hot" additions to chocolate.

I don't really go for bars so much as truffles these days. Lindor extra dark - or better yet, their coffee truffles, but those only come in the "dark chocolate assortment" bag. But like I told someone at the store, "Oh what a hardship - in order to eat coffee truffles, I have to eat dark and extra dark truffles too. The horror!" Also awesome were some green tea truffles that my girlfriend picked up a few years ago at a World Market, but they were a Christmas item, and I never have seen them again. :(

As far as bars go, Ghiradelli's midnight cabaret is great though. Dark chocolate with a blackberry note to it, and I am a huge sucker for blackberries. And oddly enough, Meijer (which is like a regional version of Target, except that it started out grocery and expanded into other departments) was making its own store-brand "high-end" chocolate bars to compete with Lindt and Ghiradelli and so on - and their dark chocolate/ginger bars and milk chocolate tiramisu bars were AMAZING. I think they've been discontinued, sadly, because I haven't seen either in the stores for a long time, and the few remaining bars from that line have all been marked down.
