Buttsex, etc.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-16 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Is it a generally uncommon thing for not-very-long (<7,000 words) R- or NC-17 rated slashfics to include buttsex, but NOT have the buttsex be the climactic moment of the romantic arc of the story? Like, have the buttsex come before the emotional peak? Or have an actual legit breather space of several hours between the "OMG I love you!" confession and the commencement of buttsex? 'Cause in my current fandom, it's damn hard to find a fic that does any of that. Either they're PG-13 rated or they're long and chapterrific, which just has a different feel to it.

(When I say buttsex, I mean any kind of sex actually, but it's usually buttsex).

It differs really (usually depending on the genre).

It's uncommon and I hate that it's so uncommon. In my current fandom the sex nearly always comes at the very end of the story. It usually is the end. Orgasms and fade to black.

There are a lot of fics that focus on the porn, so it's expected that sex (butt or otherwise) would be the, erm, climax. I have found some shorter fics that are not like that, but you're right, most fics I've seen with explicit sex either make it the high point of the plot (to the extent that there is a plot) or are longer stories.

Oh god, this. Especially if one or more of the characters just found out they're into gay sex. Just, seriously? You don't want to take a freaking minute, let alone a day or week or something realistic, to come to terms with your newfound sexuality?

I've accepted defeat and just accepted that in the magical world of fanfic usually the progression will be "I love you"->"Me too omg"-"Let's go to bed"-*sex*-*tacked on ending*. That way, whenever I find something that's not like this (which is unfrequent), I feel accomplished.

I've done it on ocasion so I'm not guilt-free, but I do my best to avert the trope, and on ocassions I have subverted it on purpose for a lot of stories. When I've played it straight (ha) it's usually because there was a previous, long time of pining from both characters (only it was unknown to each other), so you have UST first. Then they confess and then it comes the ZOMG I'VE BEEN WANTING TO DO IT WITH YOU FOR AGES PLEASE LET'S.

Right there with you. I hate that. That's generally not how it works in real life, so with very few exceptions, that should not be how it works in fic.

(I admit I have done it a few times, but it's always been a case of "the mutual attraction and UST has already been going on for CHAPTERS, so now that it's out in the open...")

Hahahahahha, in a current series of RP scenes, first we had to let one character (who is SO not the type for casual sex and would have some issues with romance anyway) get over his initial hangups after the confession, and then he decided he wanted to make it "just right" and wait for the perfect moment and arrange things to be wonderful for their first time... but since it's Tiger & Bunny, we intend to have their call bracelets go off at really inopportune moments. It depends on the fandom. I think this was relatively common in SGA, but for more antagonistic pairings I think the rush is often what people are looking for... I myself am a fan of stories where people are having kind of miserable repressed sex with each other from the start and work backwards towards acknowledging they even like each other, but I'm not sure if that qualifies.

I wish it was more uncommon. I like fics where the characters either have sex beforehand and it's milked for conflict or the characters have sex a while afterward. I feel that way about all sex/love in fics, though. I like it a bit more convoluted than "Hey, I love you!" "Oh my god, me too! Let's make love!" "Sure!" Of course, the exception for me is when the characters reunite after an ordeal. If they, then, say "Wow, mutual feelings! Sex!" It's fine with me.
