Fictional "slurs"

(Anonymous) 2013-10-16 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'm working on an original story (urban fantasy) that includes two families in a group of people with mutant-like abilities. They have been rivals for a very long times and many of them have killed members of the other family over an incident involving a young man and woman from each family...the woman disappeared and the man was hanged for it when the members of the man's family had personal evidence and witnesses to say there was more to the story.

I thought of the idea of since this fighting has been going on between these families (and in this society people are divided by what 'old name family' they are related to or close to) the two have come up with terms for the other family. The two of them are different ethnicity wise but their hatred has more to do with family history and reputation than their ethnicity (though it does play a part) . The warring has been going on from 1600s to today. One family sees the other (who have an admittedly fearsome reputation) as nothing but "dirty crooks" while the other family sees their rivals as being sanctimonious liars and sleazeballs who suck up to power (and that family is crooked and does have its hand in some questionable things.) Their rivalry has included things as major as duels to the death, revenge murders, murders to restore the family's name and beating up a member of the enemy family to scare them.

Would it be accurate to call the terms they call each other "slurs" . They have history and meaning within the community but are not based on ethnicity. Also would people find the fact that they have slurs for each other offensive.

A "slur" is an insult not necessarily related to ethnicity, so it's accurate to call the insulting terms they have for each other "slurs."

If they didn't have insults for each other, I'd find it unbelievable and too... clean. Sure, any kind of insult can be offensive, even fantasy insults. But, don't compromise your story by toning down the dirtier parts to avoid offending anyone.

AYRT

Ah....okay that makes sense.

The ones I came up with so far are based on bits of their names ("yaka" and "tryk"). They look weird but then again a lot of racial slurs I've seen I think would probably look weird if context was stripped away.

*nod * Yeah I was thinking that because their history is so heated it would make sense. Like a couple guys form family 2 got mad that someone from family 1 made a remark about them in jest (probably snide jest to be fair) and demanded that he was banned from the community get together. When that was brushed off they found the guy and set him on fire before his kid. So yeah. Also things like family crest/flag burning are their equivilant of flipping the bird at each other.

The "bits of their names" insults are good, imo. It drives home the notion that they hate each other so much that just saying a shortened version of the other's name is an insult in and of itself because there is so much bad history behind their feud.
