My girlfriend said the same thing a few months back, so I was just like "Here, we're going to sit down at your computer and I'll demonstrate for you." It was helpful because I could see exactly what she was having trouble with, and point things out on the screen, and so on. I'd offer to do the same, but not quite so easy over the net. :/

Two tips that might make a huge difference, though, that I had always taken for granted until I realized why she was having problems:

- The "neutral position" for the poles is not halfway in between the two lines you're not supposed to let the fish get past. It's actually at the exact middle of the fishing screen, regardless of what kind of pole you use. If you use a strength rod at Bass'ken, and keep the cursor in the middle of the little window that shows the view of the lake and your rod and so on, you barely ever even have to move the cursor to catch the fish that are currently selling for 1000-3000 gold or more apiece. Because those fish are wusses and barely pull at all, and the lines for the strength rod are far apart towards the bottom of the screen. ;)
- Vertical cursor position doesn't matter at all - only horizontal. The casting distance is determined entirely by the gauge at the bottom of the window, and the fish is reeled in at the same speed when it's hooked no matter what you do - all you need to focus on is the side to side movement. Similarly, once you've cast the line with the two clicks (once to start the casting distance gauge, again to stop the gauge and actually cast), clicking makes no difference, so you don't have to worry if you accidentally click while hauling the cursor back and forth. It's ALL horizontal cursor position - that is literally the only thing that matters, and it only matters when there's a fish on your line.

(This is probably tl;dr useless info, but hey, I am in favor of people having fun on Gaia without having to spend real money. :D)
