Good luck. The more female voices on the inside, the better. Just remember that no matter how much shit is thrown your way, there are those of us who appreciate your dedication so, so much.

Perfect first comment! IA

"Look at me, I'm a girl gamer!"

Stop. If you don't make it an issue, and you're actually good at what you do, other people won't make it an issue. If they do, fuck them.

Makes me sad that that's what you got from reading this secret. You are obviously part of the problem.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-17 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
if it won't happen ('other people won't make it an issue') why include that disclaimer at the end?

it's almost as if you knew your argument was BS from the start.

Yeah, wow, can't imagine why the OP is worried about being in this industry when making the barest mention of their gender suddenly makes her one of 'those' girl gamers.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2013-10-16 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Fandom definitely and perhaps "game journalism." There are bad apples in both sectors, but the social media associated with many games becomes an echo chamber for assholes with minimal accountability.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-10-16 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Both? There are chill video game makers out there. You can probably find them. There are chill fans too. However, yeah, both groups have their problems.

Definitely be more afraid of the fandom. They are way more vocal and verbally violent with the hate and the sexism and misogyny.

YOU FUCKING GO, OP. I LOVE that you're studying game design. Try not to focus too much of what you're afraid of. There's a lot for a woman to be intimidated by, especially in specific areas of work, but I think the key would to be fearless and just do your thing.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-16 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Major kudos to you! Really :) way to go OP. There undoubtedly will be assholes within the industry and the fandom but i hope that won't stop ya because there will be bloody awesome people on both sides as well.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-16 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't make shit games.

Don't be! Get out there and do your think, OP, and be one more voice for women gamers. We need as many as we can get.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-17 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
If the jerks in fandom gets you down, just remember, you're actually creating and following your dreams while they have nothing better to do but be bitter and hateful.

Don't fear them; pity them for being such sad, sad human beings.

(Anonymous) 2013-10-17 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
\m/ Internet fistbump of solidarity. I'm a female gaming student too. I don't actually play "traditional" games because they are way too violent. I want to make games I want to play.

I totally understand how you feel about the "crap-getting" thing. We're going to be the change we want to see.

You are awesome, continue to be awesome. It'll be fucking hard but know that you have the full force of the Girl Gamer Army behind you <3 We have to change this industry eventually, and the Suffragettes had to start somewhere, right?

(Anonymous) 2013-10-17 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Woman in the gaming industry here.

Don't be afraid of either. Seriously. Every day, you'll go to work, probably an office if you're aiming for that kind of thing. You'll talk about the job, you'll wonder what's for lunch, you'll pound away at a keyboard or a Cintiq, you'll go to meetings where you get to talk about what you like to talk about, and then there will be stuff that you don't want to talk about.

It's a job. Unless you're CS you don't have to deal with the fanbase, and over the past few years, the industry has grown in maturity as well. I've been in it for 8 years, and it's been fantastic every step.

Be more worried about having a rockin' portfolio. Best of luck in the future, anon!

man it makes me really happy to hear that.

omgosh op, that sounds like such an awesome thing to be studying for! Do your best and screw the haters. Easier said than done but I think a lot of people will be rooting for you. ♥

(Anonymous) 2013-10-17 11:58 am (UTC)(link)
What country are you from? If you're not from/working in the US/Japan you should be fine. Discrimination against women in gaming is much, much less of an issue in western Europe, for instance.

If you're in the US ... well, good luck. Now that the issue has been getting a lot more attention lately, a discussion might get started that will lead to more acceptance. In 10 years' time of something. And you can be part of that change! Isn't that exciting? Try to see the positive aspects of that?
