So... Mulan...

Evidently, Mulan is bisexual, and we have the Swan Queen shippers to thank for it.

Personally, I thank my sense of taste that I dropped the show.

Once Upon a Time

Ahh thank you. I was very confused.

A recent episode of Once Upon a Time has Mulan almost but not quite revealing that she's romantically attracted to Aurora. According to some posts hitting my dash, it's a bone tossed to the relentless advocacy of Swan Queen shippers. This astounds me because I didn't think anyone could be more wrong this week than the Republican party caucus of the U.S. House.

What's wrong with Mulan being bisexual? It's not the legendary Mulan from China but the ABC/Disney fairy tale version of her. Like how the show made the Beast and Rumpelstiltskin the same even though they are two separate characters in the European folktales.

I don't watch the show but I'm guessing it's because it seems more like the writers trying to pander to the internet fandom by making a token bi character kind of the way glee did with Santana, it's kind of condescending

Oh is Mulan not a regular/main character?

Nothing's wrong with Mulan written as bisexual. A fair bit is wrong with shippers taking credit for writing decisions.

Oh, I see.

MTE

This is probably the best reason I've heard of to watch this show.

How does the Swan Queen shippers make Mulan bisexual? And why is Mulan being bi a bad thing?

That being said, I dropped the show after the first season so I have no idea what's going on anymore. It was an interesting idea that got out of hand.

It's not enough to get me into catching up on episodes.

Are you implying Jack Harkness doesn't qualify as a slut? I think he would take offense at that.

He has transcended that status.

But is she really bi, though? A lot of people seem to think she had feelings for Phillip, but she never said so (and she didn't look defensive when she told Aurora she didn't) so I'm going to see if the show mentions it. (Even I thought she did at first, but until we get confirmation I think it could play out either way.)

Bi or gay, I think it's awesome. Fandom had absolutely nothing to do with it though; I'm sure the writers have been planning this for some time.

I think the writing was on the wall when the characters were introduced at the start of season 2. It's a shame that just about everything else about the second season was repellant.

I wasn't a huge fan of the second season either, but I continued watching anyway. IMO you're right, the Mulan/Aurora thing has been around from the beginning but it flew over a lot of people's heads. There's plenty of people on tumblr going, "But was Mulan really about to reveal her feelings for Aurora, or was she going to tell her about her love for Phillip?"

Not to mention the whole "Disney's first bisexual character" thing. Ok, ABC Studios *may* be getting a free trademark pass on blatant product placement for Animation Studios and Consumer Products (not to the show's benefit), but ABC, Marvel, and ESPN are independent parts of the conglomerate, and I don't expect to see Princesses(tm) and etc get anything from OuaT continuity. Especially after Snow's affair with Frankenstein (and Charming's ridiculous double-standard), Belle becoming the show's dramatic punching bag, and the Boy Who Would Never Grow Up reduced to the missing genetic link to Rumple and Henry.

Yea, OUAT is pretty self contained, I don't think this is going to translate into a lot of cash or change. The show could get better ratings (at least for a while) because people are curious, but it could also hurt ratings if people flip out; maybe TPTB did want to do something for the fanbase, but I don't believe this is solely in reaction to their desires.

Re: So... Mulan...

(Anonymous) 2013-10-17 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know, man. It might be fandom influence because it's done by the team behind Lost, Fringe, etc, right? Those shows have an unusual LACK of LGBT characters (I can't even think of guest characters who were LGBT) and OUAT is REALLY heteronormative. I can't help feeling that something must've changed for them to think, "Oh hey, maybe we could write a bi character?"
