what I got from the various encounters with other gods is that the old gods are pretty weak because no one really worships them anymore. They are kind of hiding out.

This. Also, they point out that it's the Christian apocalypse which is why the angels and other Christian religious figures tend to take center stage. (The other gods, btw, are pissed about this and tend to argue that their own apocalypses are much more important and who do these jerks think they are?)

I couldn't remember if that thing about it being the Christian apocalypse so that's why all Christian theology is important right now was canon or something I read in a fic. But, yeah, that too.

I don't think they've ever come out specifically in canon to say that's why there are so many more Christian mythology figures but the bit with the other gods grousing about it is totally canon. It happened in Hammer of the Gods and was one of the only good things in that episode.
