I mean, in all fairness, I think he wrote a song about beating his wife too. I can't say I've ever listened to much Lennon/The Beatles though, so don't quote me on that.

Jealous Guy, which is a beautiful song, but is straddles the line between apology and apologia is a very uncomfortable way. And I don't think John was going for that.

Also, while Getting Better (off of Sgt Pepper) was primarily Paul's song, John contributed the 'I used to be cruel to my woman' verse, which was, of course, autobiographical (and a little optimistic about his change of heart).
