Rape Culture Wins Again

(Anonymous) 2013-10-17 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Purpleport.com is a portfolio hosting site that allows models and photographers to network. Models have been campaigning for some time to make such sites safer, by the removal of photographer members guilty of sexual assault and sexual harassment, and by removing the culture of casual misogyny, victim-silencing and rape apology in its forums.

A couple of days ago, a member made this joke on the public forums (link to screenshot):

Text of the joke for those who don't want to copy and paste the link: “I just heard on the BBC news that in India, a woman is raped every 20 minutes. Well, I thought, at least you don't have to spit on her cunt to get it wet, the last guy will have left it nice and most.”

When several model members reported this, they were told “Many comedians get away with worse. It may be tasteless but it's still a joke.” by the site admins. When models objected to the dismissal of their reports, they were met with yet more dismissal.

What followed was a public outcry about the unfairness of this on various social media sites. The models who protested the inaction of the moderators on their own private Facebook pages were then banned from the site. Many of those models rely on the site for their livelihood and none of the banned models had any record of previous infractions with the site. The member who originally made the joke had his forum privileges revoked, but still remains a member.

Even with the relative anonymity of the internet, why would anyone think this an ok thing to say? This mentality is abhorrent, made even worse by the active inaction on the part of the site moderators. They have created and are promoting a hostile environment from which women are expected to find work.

It's as bad a street prostitution. Complete with the rape.
