Copyright Infringement

(Anonymous) 2013-10-17 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Just got slapped with a copyright infringement notice from my internet service provider (Charter, for those who may have different ones.) And being that I know it's damn well justified, I was mostly like, "...damn. They finally caught me."

Except I look at the file they claimed I was accessing illegally, and I never did? Not that file anyway.

Turns out my sister just doesn't know how to get around using torrents. How silly is that?

I'm torn between laughing at you and going all "damn, that sucks, sorry anon"

You can do both. It's ridiculous, honestly. XD
starphotographs: I like him. He kind of looks and acts like one of my characters. (I did not know this when I started liking him!) (Victor (...>:|))

That happened to my boyfriend and I. He takes the blame because he downloaded a shitton of movies at once. But I insisted it had to be me, because I went on a huge anime torrenting binge around that time.

Now it's all streaming and rar-sharing sites for us.

(GODDAMMIT CENTURYLINK MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS. >:|)

Yeah, I do direct downloads almost all the time. I haven't torrented anything is years, so whatever.

Out of curiosity, did you get any follow up/consequences? I've put the fear of the ever watchful internet eye into my sister, so I don't expect it'll happen again, but I might need to do a file cleanup if people are going to be nosy about it. :/
starphotographs: This field is just more space for me to ramble and will never be used correctly. I am okay with this! (Ginko (default))

We never heard a word about it again. I guess they just do it to scare people straight? Dunno, man. :/

Glad to hear that, at least. I'll just keep on doing my thing then.

If it is like comcast you get a few strikes and they can then shut off your service or cut the bandwidth I believe. But I don't think anyone has officially gotten those punishments.

My brother got caught once with something and this is at least six years ago and nothing has happened since.

Damn, I guess I ought to make sure I don't get too enthusiastic with my torrenting, then. It's only like a couple of movies a month right now and legit methods for the rest, but still. Ouch.

Watch out for content from NBC Universal, I guess? It was one of the Mummy movies that was flagged as the "unlawfully accessed" file, and the complaint came from NBC. I don't know how many other corporations actually monitor these things.

Have you tried filestube? Pretty good site for finding direct downloads, and those don't get traced nearly as often.

Thanks for the heads up about NBC (pretty sure Disney is another risky one, too). Yeah, I use the alternatives for smaller files, but I prefer either streaming or torrents for movies because the latter usually come with warnings about quality and viruses. I caught some nasty malware from bad downloads a couple of times.

You have Charter too? ah man. I have them too because Tim Warner doesn't cover our area at least for internet service (TW y u no cover THE BIGGEST DAMN CITY IN NC???).My mom says Charter is really crappy. I agree, there has been on ENTIRE AFTERNOON our internet just wouldn't work and nothing was wrong with our router.

Ayep. I live in the biggest town in rural nowhere, so I get two options: Charter or Centurylink. They both suck more than a little, and Charter (which bought out my previous provider) regularly cuts out. I swear, it's like they don't understand internet is crucial to survival these days. :/

Is around Charlotte, if you don't mind me asking?

It IS. for finding jobs and other stuff for me anyway, especially since i'm less able to get around. (I have no drivers license) .

I had Charter when I lived in Western MA. From what I recall it really sucked.

TW might not cover it because there are certain agreements that give smaller companies charge of providing internet/cable/etc to an area. Where I live is one [for a different company], which is a pain.

I use torrents all the time. Peerblock or go home.

admittedly the majority of my torrenting is comic books which tend to get overlooked

Re: Copyright Infringement

(Anonymous) 2013-10-17 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, try to torrent like a hundred Disney movies and see if that peerblock still works. Your guess is as good as mine, but torrents seems to sneak by fine if they're books/comic books/individual songs. (Not my experience, but I've heard that.)

It's essentially a p2p-focused firewall application that prevents incoming and outgoing connections from IP addresses on blacklists. I used to get copyright letters until I started using the program's predecessor PeerGuardian. Now I keep it on all the time -- have not gotten a letter since 2007.
