This this this. I was going to say basically the same thing but you've covered it for me.

There's also the fact that the vast, vast majority of people who ship don't actually think their pairing is canon. Even the ones who squeal "OMG SO CANON YOU CAN NEVER CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE" are usually exaggerating for effect. They just think it could be interpreted that way and want to interpret it that way for whatever reason.
