I agree with you, but I think the secret is more about widespread meme of slapping "SO GAY" on all male intimacy. It's not that people ship all men who touch each other, it's that they use "they touched each other" to justify the ship. I ship Remus/Sirius (or I did like... a decade ago) and I would be annoyed if someone put the words "OBVIOUSLY HOMOSEXUAL" on that picture.
