A book series written in 2007 and a book series written in 2013? LGBTQ narratives have become a lot more 'acceptable' to the common public over the last several years. For comparison within the same author, look at the original Percy Jackson series, which Riordan finished four years ago. Both Rowling and Riordan are putting lgbtq characters in their most recent works, but neither had them in their older ones.
(As a side note both Riordan and Rowling also sucked at racial diversity in their earlier works, but have gotten way better in their newer ones.)
