The kudos thing also doesn't work if your story gets regularly re-read. The most popular story I ever wrote in any fandom had about a 1:8 kudos/hit ratio in the beginning, but now it's 1:22-ish. AO3 only lets you give a kudos once, after all.

fics with lots of chapters don't benefit from ratios either, since you can only leave kudos once :\

is this only when people are logged in to ao3 or something? because i'm pretty sure i've left more than one kudo to several multi-chaptered fics.

then again, i clear my browsers's cookies/cache often. maybe that does the trick.

Even if you're not logged in, you do need to clear your cookies/cache to be able to give kudos more than once on a fic, yes.
