LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT HAVEN, MY FRIEND. It is my favorite underrated show and I am a bit of an evangelist, so I apologize for this post in advance.

FBI agent Audrey Parker (Emily Rose) gets sent to the small town of Haven, Maine to hunt down an escaped convict who is later found dead under mysterious circumstances, said "mysterious circumstances" being "sometimes people in this town get cursed with really terrible superpowers."

It is at about this point when you're probably starting to guess -- accurately -- that the show is based veryveryvery loosely on a Stephen King work. Specifically the novella "The Colorado Kid," with which it shares basically nothing except the name of the town and the fact that there was a mysterious murder of someone called "The Colorado Kid."

Audrey, an orphan who never knew her family, is drawn into the 27-year-old mystery of the Colorado Kid when a newspaper photo of the day of his death includes a woman who looks enough like her that she might be Audrey's mother, a woman whom nobody else recognizes and about whom nobody can remember anything. Because of this, and her curiosity about the "Troubles" that afflict some of the locals, Audrey opts to stay in Haven and investigate with the eager help of Nathan Wuornos (Lucas Bryant), a local cop with no sense of touch, and the reluctant help of Duke Crocker (Eric Balfour), a local smuggler-with-a-heart-of-gold with no sense of respect for the law. What the three of them gradually discover not only changes their lives, it may change the lives of everyone in Haven.

Format-wise, the show is a "supernatural event of the week" procedural with a long-running mytharc underlying everything, and IMO it's one of the best arc-based shows out there as far as knowing how to pace its reveals. The cases of the week are generally pretty engaging, but this is absolutely a show whose greatest strength is its characters and the relationships between them. The three main actors are brilliant at what they do and have amazing chemistry in any combination, and if you're into that sort of thing Duke and Nathan are subtexty as hell. The whole show is just my favorite thing on television and I highly recommend it to pretty much everyone, ever. It's currently in its fourth season on SyFy; the previous three are all available on Netflix and the current season is being posted to Hulu.
