Tumblr is the bastard child of Twitter and Blogging with Facebook as a godparent

Most fandom places beforehand have been about little but in-depth interaction. Tumblr and a lot of the more current ones are about a lot of interactions, but shallow ones. So it's easy to be anti-social and not really participate and still be a part of fandom, as opposed to before.

Think of a party. If it's a small party with a few people talking intensely to each other, anyone who is quieter or not really doing much stands out and is very much not a part of the main group. But if it's a large party with people chatting in passing, you can do nothing but stand there the whole night sipping at a drink and still be a part of the party, participating in it.
