Sometimes I think I'm the only person who doesn't really care for Kill la Kill. I watched the first ep and found it well animated but kinda...hollow. None of the characters clicked with me and I felt no connection to anything happening onscreen. Also I didn't realize anime needed to be saved. (Is it being attacked? Are the titans attacking anime now?)

Popularity in the west has gone down a bit and some people have been complaining that the newer shows cater heavily to people who like fanservice and moe, creating an even smaller niche market by alienating people who might otherwise be interested.

...Such concern might be slight justified in light of the fact that pandering to niches is part of what's sinking much of the domestic game development in Japan (with notable exceptions such as Nintendo, of course, who don't). This has resulted in a decline in interest in the West as well as an unprecedented rise in the popularity of Western games amongst the Japanese themselves.

I've seen that attitude a lot, and even so there's still plenty of anime that come out that aren't all fanservice/moe -- off the top of my head, we've got Space Brothers still going, Samurai Flamenco just started, there's Magi which is a decent little piece of shounen, multiple sports series just started, Silver Spoon and Eccentric Family from last season, etc. etc. And if it's popularity in the West people are talking about, then, um, there's this little series that just finished, it's called Attack on Titan, you might have heard of it, it was kinda popular. So even if we assume anime needs to be saved anointing Kill la Kill as that savior seems a bit odd, since it's neither the first nor the only show to stand out from the pack of moe fanservice fests.

I mean, the whole saving anime thing was joke at first and there was hype, but some people started taking it seriously and it stuck. That's the biggest actual reason why Trigger is saving anime.

And no, not all shows have heavy pandering, but you could definitely argue that there's been an increase in its intensity within the shows that feature it and it's become more prevalent in show overall. Also I don't really consider one (or two if you want to bring Free! into it too) show doing exceptionally well in the West a mid 2000s-level revival of anime in the West. It makes me optimistic, sure, but I don't consider it to be at the interest level as it once was.

Also a bit off-topic but whatever, how's Samurai Flamenco holding up? I've been watching a few shows this season, but wasn't sure about Samurai Flamenco.

I don't think we're really going to see 2000s-level Western interest in anime again in general, even if every season was composed completely of Cowboy Bebops. One of the big things that helped with that boom was having shows on western TV (especially the old Toonami, where kids could catch it after school) and nowadays it's pretty much down to Pokemon, reruns of DBZ on Saturday morning, and the late-night Saturday Toonami. There's a lot of streaming alternatives, of course, which is why word of mouth is definitely helpful, but I don't know if we'll ever manage to recreate the anime boom of the early 2000s. (And while I'll agree there's been an increase in moe and fanservice shows, there's also more shows period. I recall reading somewhere that the current fall season has one of the largest amounts of new shows ever. I don't generally watch heavily moe or otaku-oriented fanservice shows, and I've still got six shows I'm watching this season with more I would've liked to try but haven't got enough time for.)

Samurai Flamenco's only aired two episodes but I'm quite enjoying it so far. I like the cast and it's shaping up to be pretty fun. I have high hopes for it, especially since it's a noitaminA show.
