I don't think it's anything too special, but if you like the idea of a fairy tale pastiche it's a pretty good one.

As for comparing it to Fables, I don't think they have a whole lot in common, personally. Fables is trying to much more serious than OUaT is. I personally prefer my shows with a bit of cheese.
