Re: Reading article on that kid that got kidnapped by the romani

DA but an anon from upthread.

I don't think anyone is disputing that there is discrimination and several people (including myself) have even said that there is discrimination. What many of us are trying to tell you is that not all discrimination is racism and this is a case of discrimination, not racism. It doesn't matter if Romani are a separate race or even if they stand out from other ethnicities where they live because the prejudice against them is NOT based on their race or appearance. It is a reaction to their culture.

You are also trivialising real racism by willfully confusing discrimination with it.

And I can't speak for anyone else about this part, but it DOES rankle that an American is telling several Europeans about Romani in Europe. We live here. We live alongside the Romani. There may be Romani in America and they may even accept being called Roma but they are not the same people many of us are talking about. Roma IS a slur to most Romani here. They DO have a specific culture and lifestyle that preys on all other people. For you to come in here and try to tell me any different is laughable. It's offensive to me (and I know for many other Europeans but I am only speaking about myself here) when America or Americans try to tell non Americans about their culture or their country. It mostly stems from your government pretending to be the world's police, but there are enough individuals like you on the internet who think they know better than the people who are actually living with the stuff they're talking about. It's offensive, condescending, dismissive, ignorant and egotistical.

Speaking as an European also living alongside Romani people, the treatment and attitudes they face sure looks like racism (and discrimination, yes, but racism as well) to me. You to claim that all the European Romani have a specific culture and lifestyle that preys on other people. That is fucking offensive to me as an European. Offensive, condenscending, dismissive, ignorant and egotistical. And yes, racist.

I vehemently disagree with this sentiment.

I do agree with you that some parts of Romani culture has to be changed, because when you're scared to send your daughter to school because some of your people still practice marriage by kidnapping and you're scared to let her get out of your sight, something is really wrong. But let's not pretend that any Romani who's willing to break with their old lifestyle would be welcomed with opened arms by the general population.

romanies are more or less an ethnic/racial group. antiziganism is described as racism and/or prejudice against romanies. i'm not saying all antiziganism is racially charged but much of it is, hence why i am claiming this is a racial issue as well as an ethnic one. as far as i'm aware, for instance people from india are technically classified as caucasian, but it's clear that discrimination against them is still racially charged, even if incorrectly, because - like it or not - being "white" and being caucasian aren't always the same. upthread i mentioned something about people holding disdain for "brown people" and this is what i meant. race and ethnicity are intertwined here.
