Personally, I always found Haruhi to be an interesting character due to her exuberant, spontaneous nature (that, and I love the hair ribbons). Plus, I never really saw her as someone who wants to be somewhere else. Rather, I got the impression she just wanted the world she was already in to be more interesting, which I can relate to. It's those traits I find that make her fun to watch.

However, and this might be just me, I don't think I'd find her nearly as entertaining if she were the principal narrator of the show instead of Kyon. With Kyon telling events from his perspective, it puts more distance between the viewer and Haruhi, and as a result her brash, manipulative actions don't feel as obnoxious as they might otherwise be. There's a bigger sense of unreality and detachment about it all.

I kind of like to think of it in the same vein as Sherlock Holmes. That is, Watson always acted as the narrator and gave a sort of human, down-to-earth feel to the stories, wheras Holmes' on his own would get too egocentric to be nearly as enjoyable as he is when Watson factors into the narrative.

So in short, it's Haruhi's strange personality that both draws me to her character and makes the show fun to watch, but I think she'd be less appealing if she were telling her own stories.
