That would require Sherlock fandom to be more about mysteries and less about shipping.

I don't and have never shipped Sherlock and John in any incarnation in any of my fanfics. Which is also why I've never published any of them online; not shipping Johnlock will get you branded a raging homophobe by half the people in the circles I run in and even considering Joanlock would cause an internet backdraft so hot your keyboard will fry.

Not in ACD Holmes fandom it won't. Current fanworks exchange I'm part of is strongly gen (but accepting of Holmes/Watson - NOT Johnlock, shudder)

Not everyone ships Johnlock. AO3 has quite a few Elementary Sherlock/Joan fics and there were definitely some requests for it this Yuletide.

There is, um, a big difference between shippers of Holmes/Watson and "Johnlock" shippers. Holmes/Watson shippers are all about the super-friendship + Victorian homophobic angst + porn, with the angst and porn being suggested but optional, while Johnlock shippers have a militant "the only point of this show at all is to ship Johnlock" contingent that kinda invades everything.

Sherlock/John (well any incarnation of Holmes and Watson) are my OTP but I love them as gen, platonic soulmates or kick arse BFFs as well. I really wish there was less 'getting together' fic and more gen stuff or at least fic where it's an established relationship and the focus is on a case or something. I could honestly do without the porn.

I think that's due more to the blatant ship teasing of the writers than anything else, though. And I should probably be more clear. I sort of use "Johnlock" as every incarnation of the Sherlock Holmes/John Watson ship, just because it's easier to type. (Personally, I think Holson sounds better, but very few people use that portmanteau.)

I dont know about Sherlock fandom, but actual Sherlock Holmes fandom is loaded with mysteries.

Also, it would make a pretty good framework for shipping too. Especially as its implied that some of Jekyll's "undignified" desires he had to repress may have been homosexuality.

Really? That's weird, I wrote and published a John Watson/Mary Morstan in the Sherlock verse and I only got positive comments.

Hell, other Sherlock fans encouraged me to write it when I first brought up the idea of awesome!Mary
