OuAT Fandom:Worse Than Avatar

I thought I'd never see a fandom more hateful and shipping deluded than the first Avatar series fandom, but Jesus Christ. The Captain Swan shippers are actually tweeting the guy who plays Neil just to tell him that he's ugly and Collin is amazing and whatnot. Just...what the fuck? Seriously? I get that you really want that ship, but he ISN'T Neil. He's a real person that you're being massive dicks to. SwanQueen isn't much better, either. I don't understand why people don't get that just because a pairing you like isn't made canon, that that doesn't make the writers homophobes/racists/sexist jerks, etc.

I kind of wanting the series to end with no pairings being made canon, just to spite them all.

It was a good fandom at the beginning :( I avoid the SwanQueen side of fandom, though, and most of the shipping in the fandom. SwanQueen in particular, even though I ship it, the fans have been... special. Like when they actively hated on Ginnifer Goodwin because she said something akin to "ha no, Emma and Regina aren't going to get together."

Idk, it's still a show I watch weekly, but I haven't actively participated in the fandom since season 1 when it was a really lovely tight-knit group of people. I miss it.

I can't stand Swan Queen either (and've since left the fandom too), but to be fair, the anger at Ginnifer Goodwin was mostly because her initial reason for why that ship would never become canon was because OuAT was a "family show", and that "it's not Once Upon A Time In My Pants". Which made people pissed because true love is pretty much the biggest theme of the show, and almost every character had or has a love interest, but it was only when a same-sex couple was brought up that it got the 'think of the children' response

Speaking as a lurking member of the OUAT fandom, maybe they're just putting a new twist on meta? Fairy tale characters in the real world leading to an inability to tell fantasy from reality? ... Nope. Pretty sure you're right and they're just being massive dicks. I don't understand being so invested in a ship you'd send abuse to the actors or creative team about it. I mean unless the writers replied to the fan crazy with "you guys are all fucking nuts and just for that we're going to kill off all your faves in horrific ways," which they haven't.

Also apparently the creative team just can't catch a break:

Swan Queen not canon? All the death threats, all of them! Must ask leading "when did you stop beating your wife" questions of creative team at conventions, leading to greatly increased chance of actors refusing to attend for fear of fan crazy! Also they are all homophobes!

Captain Swan kiss? Must start twitter campaign to insult actual person portraying distant threat to OTP!

Henry doesn't want to spend time with Regina because her behavior frightens him? Tell twelve-year-old actor playing him he deserves to die!

Give Mulan female love interest? Ew, I thought this was a family show! How dare you pander to those depraved gays! Also queerbating, SwanQueen must get married and make out onscreen or it doesn't count!

Facebook game reveals a letter written by Rumpelstiltskin in which the grieving sorcerer wrote to (as far as he knows, dead because of him) Belle and ends with "I hate you, I hate you, I wish you were d--" Send writers preemptive flounce threatening to leave fandom and never come back unless totally in character letter is replaced by smoopy fluff! Break their cup? Blasphemy! Put Belle in a short skirt? OMG what a whore! Rum and Cora were romantically involved? He must never have loved Belle! It was all a lie and also Cora was a disgusting dirty whore who deserved to die! Milah left our precious woobie-kins Rumple? He should have spat on her heart before he crushed it, the slut!

--I think I got most of the crazy. I've got more Rumbelle examples because I ship them and get to see that corner of fandom's whackos from up close. Do I think there are things the show could do better? Yeah, I wish there were more good and noble POC main characters who lasted more than an episode. I wish they'd go 'fuck the pearl-clutchers' and have Mulan and Aurora and Philip raise the most badass baby ever in between having all the awesome adventures and all the awesome sex. I wish the various villain redemption arcs involved the characters doing the right thing for other reasons than in the memory or hope of impressing someone (Belle, Emma, Neal, Henry, etc) that they liked, because that's not actually redemption if they're being good for brownie points. And I wish the writers had a coherent plan for season 2. But outright insulting them is not going to result in the mud-slingers getting what they want.
