I thought people disliked him because he was racist?? I'm pretty sure either he got in the news a few years ago for spouting dumb shit about how black people are inferior or something. I remember having large amounts of seconhand embarassment on his behalf.

Racist *and misogynist*. I don't think you'd necessarily take that from the book, but there's strong evidence he's not a very nice guy.
