Your attitude about it is what is setting people off. If you didn't realize the kid was in the room, then the appropriate thing to do would be to say, "I'm sorry, I didn't see you come in," or something along those lines. Not freak out because OMG someone expects you to have sensitivity toward their child.

I DID immediately say "I'm sorry" and drop the subject, though. I was perfectly civil about it and gave no indication to the woman or her kid how I felt, but it did annoy me, which is why I'm venting about it here.
