In general and in public like I said, volume control should be key, and there's also an expectation of things (swearing, sex talk etc) that you keep to 'ears only' volume or just being aware of what type of people are around you and where you are.
At the same time, OP was at work, which to me brings out a whole different set of rules and expectations. While I wouldn't say, "You can't discuss problematic things ever!" at work, I would expect - like you said - that it's easy enough to glance around and make sure that what you're saying won't reach 'little ears' if it's a topic that should generally be adult only.
