Not OP

I don't know about you, but I'm perfectly capable of doing my job and talking at the same time. Of course, I also have the lucky job of not generally being around customers, so I get more leeway in what I can and can't say while working.

Still, the idea that one can only talk about work related things at work is naive and ridiculous. Should OP maybe have checked their volume and/or just glanced around to check for customers first? Maybe, but I don't think they were entirely in the wrong just for discussing current events at work.
