I think that your approach of messaging people personally on a one-to-one is probably the most effective at eliciting a positive response. If you post to the whole group then people are likely to view changing their behaviour as a show of weakness and capitulation (with some less than pleasant us/you group processes also kicking in). Sending private IMs doesn't guarantee that you won't get a nasty response as some people are inherently nasty, but they do mean people can acquiece without a perceived loss of face. People are also more likely to view aquiencence in this context as 'doing something for a specific individual in the group who contacted me personally' rather than 'subscribing to a mindset/viewpoint/ideology'.
