I did that. My most popular fic is old and not my best work, but receives tons of traffic. I snuck in an edited a lot of stuff, ironed out some trouble spots and people noticed. Oh man did they notice. "Hey! You altered my favorite part!" Which also happened to be the most ridiculous, hence the change. Editing is good, but make sure you don't trample people's memories by getting overzealous I guess.
