What I got out of GGG was his massive sense of entitlement (and also skeeziness), which I can't imagine endears him to many. More to your point, I decided by the end of the book that he must not have friends since there were multiple parts in the book where any true friend beta-reading would have said, "Jim, maybe you should leave this page out."
