Fandom Love

What are some things you love about your fandom? And/or loved about an old one? Don't even have to name the fandom, just the love.

The lack of shipping wars. The insane amount of fic. The awesome kinks that I didn't know I liked. Those are 3 different fandoms.

I will always love any fandom with a decent amount of long fic. (Which is why I still love the Harry Potter fandom after all this time.)

I agree. It's why whenver I'm bored I'll always head over to the HP fandom because of the amount of long fics that are completed that I can get sucked into.

So many things about my old one, but one think that really sticks out is the time a teenager threatened suicide, and someone else found her phone number and called her parents. After several wrong numbers, even. It was a crazy fandom, but damn if we didn't stick to our people. For the most part.

Gathering at a common post or forum to talk about the latest episode and its impact on the series without tons of hate for whoever/whatever it's popular to hate being spewed every which way.

The plethora of fic for my OTP. This has happened in more than one fandom and I am spoiled because of it. Also the friendships I made in a previous fandom. Haven't been able to find that since the fandom died, but not for lack of trying.

Fandom #1: There's soooooo much crackfic even though the canon is super-serious and grimdark.

Fandom #2: Has some of the prettiest fanart I've ever seen and some of the most interesting meta I've ever read.

Fandom #3: In all the time I've spent in this fandom I have never encountered a single shipping war or social justice wank.

Hannibal: The twisted, twisted humor.

God, dark humor is my favorite type of humor.

My first internet fandom was brilliant. We had a chatroom and actually talked to each others instead of just reposting memes or screaming abuse at the creators.

The people who fan-translate things and share it with the rest of us. We're a really small, quiet fandom with no wank as far as I know. There being no ship bashing is nice too!

Lots of fic and pretty fanart. Also for the most part one of them is pretty chill and relaxed, at least in the corner I hang out in.

The way everyone gets when a big event happens. There may be arguments and wank on a day to day basis, but all that USUALLY stops when something happens.

I also love just how international being in the JPop fandom is. I chat regularly with people in the US, Canada, Japan, Germany and Finland, and that's only from people I actively consider friends. It's become such a worldwide thing and I really feel like I belong in something.

Earlier this year I participated in an international fan video, where we all danced to an AKB48 song (based off a video done by the staff of this same thing). It ended up getting put on the official AKB48 channel, helped inspire other videos of the dance, and just made me feel like I'm a part of a big thing.

Hahaha!

Like that one time someone complained about having to scroll past long stream announcements that weren't that long and the thread turned into a weird shit storm that caused the amount of scrolling one had to do three times as much as it would have normally been. That was hysterical.

Ever since the main (and especially youngest) parts of the fandom moved to Tumblr, the wank has gotten more typically Tumblresque and thus far more ridiculous and entertaining. And all the older fandom places are now chill as hell, it's so relaxed and wonderful.

The canon is on crack, and the fandom EMBRACES the crack. Related, the cosplayers are completely unpretentious and will wholeheartedly dive into the crack head-first during photoshoots, no matter how stupid we all wind up looking in the resulting photos (which we then laugh hysterically at and pass around as BEST PIC EVAR).

This actually applies to a couple of my fandoms. Which is why I will never ever leave those fandoms.

Re: Fandom Love

SO MANY THINGS. Virtually no annoying shipping wars, drama or canon nitpickers, the fact that most of the people in it are older, really chill, creative and open to creative interpretations of the canon, supportive of each other in and out of fandom and just generally cool people.

My ship is small enough that there is no wank, only love, and those of us who ship it are like a mini-community within the larger fandom. And yet, it is still big enough that there is regularly new content with the ship front and centre (usually from the same small group of people, but they're all great people and pretty good to excellent writers/artists, so that's not even a downside).
