There are a lot of different ways to be involved in fandom. You can be a consumer or a producer of any kind of fanwork. Pictures and fanfic are only two types of fanwork. Others include meta, gifsets, icons, screencaps (if for no other reason than so that other people can use them for icons), fandom-themed jokes (what would Jaxom be if he lost his dragon? Ruthless!), fanmixes, remixes or covers of songs from canon, reclists (of any or all other types of fanwork), music videos, fan-composed songs, amigurumi versions of the characters, cosplay, fonts (e.g., if your fandom's canon uses its own script), T-shirts, replicas of props from canon (I'm consistently impressed by every Precursor Orb I see), adaptations of the source material, statements of the form "I like [canon] because [awesome thing about canon]!" and any number of other possible kinds of fanwork that I haven't thought of. And if you want to simply enjoy any of these from other people without creating them yourself, that, too, makes you a fan.
