My rescue dog just melted my heart.
We weren't even sure she would ever be physically able to bark because as a puppy she'd been chained outside and pretty much left, her collar never adjusted as she grew for a year. It was so bad some parts had to be surgically removed and there is some extensive scarring.
Yesterday evening when I took her to a field she started to make a strange snuffly pig grunty noise. I thought she might be sick but she only makes the noise when playing or soaking up attention from someone. I figured that was the closest thing we were going to get to a whine or bark from her.
Well a little bit ago I was halfheartedly playing with her and checking e-mails when suddenly she barked at me while bowing in a play invitation!
I'm having a hard time believing she's the same dog who not four days ago would crouch and quiver as long as people were visible. She's become playful and eager to approach new people on walks!

I googled Basenji and she does resemble them! I'd like to think her reluctance to bark might be the result of genetics and not from her physical and mental abuse.
Re: PICTURES
such a cutie! And so happy to hear she is making progress!

But yeah when she's cocking her head and giving me the pleading puppy eyes the little flippy flop that her ear following the motion kills me. She's probably going to end up a spoiled little brat. :)
