My rescue dog just melted my heart.

I volunteer with the local SPCA and three days ago (yes, on Oct. 19 my fellow Community fen) we participated in an adoption fair. I knew one of our dogs wouldn't be adopted, she was only rescued two months ago and was still extremely timid around people. But I knew the dog we buddied her with would be, he's cute, housebroken, and great with kids. I was worried that without him the tiny amount of progress we'd made with her would be lost. Just as I thought he was one of our first dogs to get adopted and we couldn't even get her to uncurl out of a corner after that. My heart broke and I ended up taking her home that night.

We weren't even sure she would ever be physically able to bark because as a puppy she'd been chained outside and pretty much left, her collar never adjusted as she grew for a year. It was so bad some parts had to be surgically removed and there is some extensive scarring.

Yesterday evening when I took her to a field she started to make a strange snuffly pig grunty noise. I thought she might be sick but she only makes the noise when playing or soaking up attention from someone. I figured that was the closest thing we were going to get to a whine or bark from her.

Well a little bit ago I was halfheartedly playing with her and checking e-mails when suddenly she barked at me while bowing in a play invitation!

I'm having a hard time believing she's the same dog who not four days ago would crouch and quiver as long as people were visible. She's become playful and eager to approach new people on walks!

Adorable! What kind of dog is she? She looks a bit like a Basenji and those don't actually bark, even without throat scarring or mistreatment.

All I know is her previous owners said one of her parents was a Bull Terrier mix.

I googled Basenji and she does resemble them! I'd like to think her reluctance to bark might be the result of genetics and not from her physical and mental abuse.

Aww! The one flopped-over ear adds so much extra adorableness. I'm glad she's doing well. :)

Her original name was Floppy. I can't be sure that's not a tag she picked up at the pound before we received her but as hearing it usually made her anxiety worse I assume it's from her first owners. We renamed her Ada (the only geek reference I got past my mother's disapproval), which she already responds to.

But yeah when she's cocking her head and giving me the pleading puppy eyes the little flippy flop that her ear following the motion kills me. She's probably going to end up a spoiled little brat. :)

What a beauty! I've only ever had rescue dogs and they were one and all the most loving, loveable creatures I've ever come across. I'm glad this baby is making such good progress with you :3

Awwwww! Hooray for rescues! Seriously, I have found that "difficult" or special needs pets make the best pets once they calm down - it's like they know they lucked out to find someone who cares enough to go the extra mile for them.
